Packaging Engineer
Summary:Designs and implements cost-effective, compliant, and sustainable packaging solutions that protect products through all shipping environments (small parcel, LTL, last-mile) and reflect brand identity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develops and validates packaging designs in collaboration with Product, Brand, and Product Integrity teams.
- Ensures compliance with e-commerce standards, UN 38.3 lithium battery testing, and global environmental regulations.
- Expands and optimizes returnable packaging systems to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
- Supports VA/VE projects by identifying material and labor savings while maintaining quality.
- Conducts supplier audits and assists with onboarding and performance evaluations.
- Leads sustainable packaging initiatives focused on material reduction, recyclability, and closed-loop systems.
- Utilizes data analytics to track performance, reduce damage, and drive continuous improvement.
- Attends industry expos to stay current on packaging innovations and best practices.
- Mentors team members and contributes to internal packaging knowledge and standards.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors in Packaging Engineering (preferred) and 5+ years in high-volume consumer or industrial product packaging.
- Proficient in CAD and Microsoft Office; strong project management and communication skills.
- Expertise in corrugated, pulp, foam, and printed retail packaging design/testing.
- Knowledge of ASTM/ISTA standards, UN 38.3, lean manufacturing, and sustainability certifications (FSC, SFI, How2Recycle).
- Able to manage multiple projects, travel up to 20%, and collaborate across global teams.
