Process Engineer


Job description:

Summary / Objective:

Provide process engineering support to Production departments. Provide the engineering, information, and analytical services needed to support process unit operations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering required.
  • 3+ years of process engineering experience required.
  • Distillation Process experience in chemical manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
  • Must be in current position minimum of 6 months.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Provide technical service to his/her assigned unit, through daily monitoring of unit operations.
  • Identify ways to improve quality, reduce costs, enhance safety, lower emissions, and present recommendations with technical substantiation to the unit team to implement improvements.
  • Develop and conduct tests and evaluate results for proposed operating changes to improve product quality, production capacity, or reduce operating costs.
  • Develop knowledge of the technical aspects of his/her assigned area.
  • Investigate the operating and economic feasibility of implementing modern technology, safety and operability recommendations and planned capacity changes.
  • Collaborate closely with the unit team to prepare the annual control budget, operating reviews, and economic studies to evaluate proposed operating programs.
  • Provide technical support to PSM/RMP and other regulatory programs.
  • Investigate production, safety, environmental or quality issues.
  • Ability to work across Japanese American cultural lines.

Physical Demands:

  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  • Have good mobility.
  • Be able to work for 12 hours.
  • Climb stairs several times per shift.
  • Have good hearing and sense of smell.
  • Work in a potentially stressful environment.

Typical Duties / Responsibilities (may include):

  • Responsible for the technical and economic aspects of process unit operations.
  • Provide technical support for the maintenance of existing equipment.
  • Improve present processes and equipment for more efficient and cost-effective operation.
  • Design and document the chemical processes required for the development of improved products.
  • Coordinate process development efforts with colleagues and management to achieve objectives.
  • Select the equipment required for the development of new products.
  • Design and document efficient and cost-effective processes and select the equipment required for the scale-up of new products from development to production.
  • Write procedures and provide training for the safe operation of new equipment.
  • Select equipment and control devices to enhance process control.
  • Perform leadership duties on selected projects which include planning, activity coordination, and progress reporting.
  • Supervise technicians as required.
  • Maintain awareness and report on pertinent modern technologies.
  • Perform tasks, as determined by the department manager, necessary for the achievement of the departments objectives.
  • Direct and manage the total coordination between engineering and production to maximize the up-time of equipment and highest quality production, in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
  • Maintain continuity of staff attitudes within a pro-active mode.
  • Ongoing reinforcement of engineering and maintenance personnel of managements overall commitment and support of short- and long-term concerns.
  • Provide engineering and maintenance services to operations group as required or needed.
  • Establish and implement engineering/maintenance cost savings techniques.
  • Maintain a safe and environmentally sound working environment.
  • Maintain objectives within fiscal budget constraints.
  • Evaluate, set goals and determine priorities within departments.
  • Interface with other engineers, managers, etc., in group meetings, as required.
  • Assist with the adherence to the requirements of regulatory agencies.
  • Reduce maintenance/material and repair costs from budget when possible.
  • Assist with the design and operation of equipment to minimize environmental releases.
  • Adherence to budget objectives and strive for savings in material and labor cost.
  • Maintain plant goals and objectives on an overall basis.
  • Communicate continuously with other management, maintaining necessary dialogue as deemednecessary.
  • Provide engineering assistance to plants by troubleshooting and designing improvements to optimize operations and reduce costs.
  • Maintain schedules and reduce costs of design changes by specifying and assisting in purchase of equipment and collaborating with outside contractors in installation of new equipment and systems.
  • Develop knowledge of the chemicals, physical and safe handling properties of chemicals used in his/her assigned area.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering is required.
  • Distillation Process experience in a chemical manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
  • 3+ minimum years of experience as a Process Engineer in a chemical or petroleum manufacturing environment is required.
